I’m getting older, officially a Senior Citizen. There are days when I forget where my keys are, forget people’s names, and sometimes have trouble thinking of a word. It is occasional and typically because I did not focus on remembering.
Nonetheless, I am protecting myself. I have my son as my co-trustee, and even though I CAN make major decisions without his permission, I have decided that any investment over a certain number MUST be approved by him.
I want a new car and saw an ad that promised up to $10,000 off the car I am looking at. I forwarded the email to my son saying, “Tempting”.
His comment: “Resist. The offer probably includes rebates that you won’t qualify for.”
So alas, I did not go to the sale. Why? I know that he wants me to get a good deal on the car. I know that these ads can be deceiving, and that it will be easier to convince me than him.
Proverbs says, “There is wisdom in multiple counselors.” As we age, we need to rely on the wisdom of others, especially our children. I know it is hard to realize that we get more susceptible to influence with age and that the kid(s) we taught now know as much, if not more, than we do.
I encourage each of you to consider protecting yourself, and make sure your legal documents build in some protection for you, just in case you should be worried. I know some days I do worry about myself.
