Don’t Miss This Surprising Early Indicator of Dementia

The first sign of dementia is usually a problem with the executive function of the brain. This is hard to spot. My sudden use of foul language can be one of the most surprising and difficult symptoms for families and caregivers to cope with. This behavior is often a result of the disease’s impact on my brain’s executive functions, which include the ability to control impulses and behave in socially appropriate ways.

As my dementia progresses, the neural pathways responsible for filtering thoughts and moderating language can become damaged. This can lead to a loss of inhibition, resulting in me saying whatever comes to mind, regardless of the social context. For someone like me who may have never used swear words in life, this change can be particularly shocking for my loved ones.

I can use inappropriate language in various settings, from casual conversations at home to public places like churches or social gatherings. It can create uncomfortable and embarrassing situations for both me and those around me.

It is important to recognize the signs of dementia as early as possible. The earlier you start planning for the journey, the better. It is rare that a doctor will see this as a sign, but if you have a family history and are thinking of getting long-term care insurance, and you notice your loved one using foul language, you should really start planning. I knew this could be a sign, and I did not notice at first when my husband started cussing (something as a pastor he did not do), as he only did it at home in response to a teen in my home cussing at him. I wish I had noticed this. If I had, I would have acted earlier to figure out how to finance long-term care insurance. There were other signs of loss of executive function that motivated me. Hopefully, you will notice this change and act. Give me a call if your loved one has started using foul language, especially if that wasn’t part of their vocabulary.
