Medicare Open Enrollment starts October 15th, and the ads are already rolling in. It’s the time of year to compare plans and see if you can save money, but how do you know who to trust? Ads are designed to sell, with each one promising more for less. The real question is: what’s right for you?
Working with a good insurance agent can help you navigate the options. However, if you want truly independent advice, go to 1-800-MEDICARE or visit www.Medicare.gov. Don’t be afraid to ask questions—Medicare is complicated, and it’s essential to understand your choices.
I’ve been reading the Medicare and You 2025 book, and even I’m overwhelmed! Personally, I’ve chosen Medicare Advantage through Kaiser. But I have friends who would NEVER go with an Advantage plan, opting for Original Medicare with a Medigap policy instead.
You need to decide which is best for you. Medicare Advantage plans limit your choice of doctors and require referrals to specialists. Traditional Medicare allows you to go to any doctor but is often more expensive when paired with a Medigap policy. If you prefer seeing the best specialists in town without restrictions, Traditional Medicare with a Medigap policy might be your best choice. But if you’re looking to save money, Medicare Advantage could be a better fit.
And don’t forget about drug coverage. Make sure to add a plan that covers your medications, either as part of a Medicare Advantage plan or a separate prescription drug plan.
Explore your options and make the best choice for your healthcare needs.
