Why Medi-Cal May Not Cover Assisted Living or Home Care

For individuals with income above the poverty level, Long Term Care is the only program Medi-Cal will cover—and only in very specific circumstances.

That means:

-Medi-Cal only pays for care in a Skilled Nursing Facility (a hospital-like setting)

-It does NOT cover Assisted Living, Board and Care, or in-home care for most middle-income individuals

While most people want to stay at home or choose assisted living, the high level of medical care provided in a Skilled Nursing Facility is often the only setting Medi-Cal will cover.

Here’s what the financial side looks like:

-A married person may be able to place their spouse in a Skilled Nursing Facility and keep all of their own income

-A single person is allowed to keep just $35/month, with the rest going toward care

With the average monthly cost of Skilled Nursing now around $12,605, Medi-Cal coverage can save families thousands every month

If you or a loved one is facing the possibility of needing long-term care, the time to plan is now. I can help you understand the rules, navigate the system, and protect what you’ve worked so hard to build.
