The federal budget is being cut. While we may understand the need for fiscal responsibility, it becomes personal when those cuts affect our care.
I’m over 65, which means Medicare is my primary health insurance—just like it is for millions of Americans. It covers my doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions (Part D), and up to 100 days in a skilled nursing facility after a hospital stay. But proposed Medicare cuts could drastically change the way care is delivered.
For example, procedures like mastectomies may become outpatient-only, with no overnight observation. After surgery, instead of receiving rehab in a facility, you could be sent home immediately—with just a few brief therapy visits per week.
And what happens when Medicare stops paying? That’s where Medi-Cal steps in. Many believe Medi-Cal is only for low-income individuals, but that’s not entirely true. The Skilled Nursing Facility program was designed to help middle-class families once Medicare stops covering care. But if funding is reduced, reimbursements to care facilities will shrink, leading to even more understaffed and overwhelmed providers.
Cuts are likely. Navigating care will become harder.
