When It’s Time to Take Away the Car Keys

My mom has been gone for 10 years now, but I still remember worrying about her driving. She had been in a couple of minor collisions, and no one wanted to be in the car when she drove. It was time to take the car away. My son decided that at Thanksgiving he was going to act. I don’t know what he said or how he did it, but he drove home with my mom’s car. She was never mad at him, but she was mad at me some days.

There is no magic (even though my son must have had some). When your loved one is not safe to drive, taking away the car is not optional. Perhaps that was the magic. That Thanksgiving, my son told me, “I am taking her car away, and I don’t care what I have to do.”

My son was a hero that day. Be like him—don’t give them an option. Too many people are killed or maimed when someone hits the gas instead of the brake.
