Family is often defined as biological. I have been blessed by family who are not biological. My brother was adopted (I was not). I have “sisters” whose parents are different from mine. I had two extra moms-in-law and two dads-in-law. I have added a “daughter” to my chosen family. I have a friend whose stepchildren are as much hers as her biological children. I have a friend who, as a dad, has raised a child not his own as a son.
The law recognizes biology, not love. If you have chosen family and you want to provide for them in your estate plan, you need to put it in writing. Love and law rarely align. Don’t leave your chosen family out.
