What do you give a loved one with dementia? It’s a tough question because many traditional gifts simply don’t fit. Children’s toys may seem appropriate but are often still too challenging, while gifts for adults can feel impractical. So, what are the best options?
Here are some thoughtful ideas shared in my support groups:
Warm Clothing: As dementia progresses, individuals often feel cold. Look for cozy options without buttons or snaps, or even consider special clothing designed to open only from the back for easier dressing.
Comfortable House Shoes: Choose ones that are easy to wear and designed to reduce the risk of falls.
Stuffed Animals or Baby Dolls: These can bring comfort and joy to many individuals with dementia.
And don’t forget the caregivers, who also deserve appreciation:
Gift Cards or Delivered Meals: Providing a meal or a way to make their lives easier is always appreciated.
Lotion or Toiletries: If you notice certain items like lotion being used up quickly, consider buying extra to help out.
A Simple Thank-You Card: A heartfelt note can mean a lot to someone who is dedicating their time and energy to caregiving.
You don’t need to spend much—just being thoughtful makes all the difference.
