A surprising link between the shingles shot and dementia prevention

A new study out of Denmark caught my attention—people who received the shingles vaccine were 20% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s. After reading a synopsis of the research, I’m rethinking my own hesitation around getting the second dose.

Vaccines are a personal choice, and like many of you, I’ve done my homework. The studies linking vaccines to autism have been thoroughly debunked and discredited. Yes, there are risks—just like there are risks with any medical intervention—but the data consistently shows that vaccines prevent far greater harm than they cause.

I got the COVID vaccine not just to protect myself, but because I often visit care facilities where my clients live, and it was required. I understood people’s concerns and respected those who were uncertain. Most years I get the flu shot, though I’ve skipped it on occasion. As for shingles—I got the first dose and ended up with a fever for two days. After having shingles twice, I wasn’t sure a vaccine would even help me.

But this new study changed my perspective. A 20% reduction in the risk of Alzheimer’s is significant. That’s a tradeoff I might be willing to make—especially considering how devastating dementia can be. I’m planning to discuss it with my doctor before making a decision.

Like many of you, I’m doing what I can to protect my brain health—cutting back on sugar, using olive oil, exercising, and taking supplements. We can’t control everything, but we can make informed choices.

If Alzheimer’s is something you or a loved one are concerned about, we can’t prevent it—but we can plan for it. I can help you put legal protections in place so that your care and your assets are secure, no matter what the future brings.

If you’re thinking ahead and want a plan that protects your dignity and your finances, give me a call.
