I was at a networking event, and someone told me, “We dodged a bullet. We thought my wife had Alzheimer’s like her mom, but the doctor says she only has ‘Mild Cognitive Impairment’—it’s not Alzheimer’s.” I had to give him the bad news: Mild Cognitive Impairment is the diagnosis doctors give for the early stages of Alzheimer’s or dementia. They did not dodge a bullet. Instead, the nice words lulled them into a false sense of security.
I was able to connect him to Alzheimer’s OC, so she could get further testing and support. She is participating now in some of the research being done, and her dementia may be slowed due to medication.
I also started working with them on a plan that includes a trust specifically designed for someone facing dementia to protect them and their assets, as well as my Dementia Medical Power of Attorney, and we have a care navigation plan started for them that will be reviewed once a year to make sure we are doing everything we can to get the best care while stretching their budget as far as possible. They will have the option of using public benefits when they need them too.
They haven’t dodged the bullet, but they are prepared, and their journey will be much easier. His wife will be able to preserve her dignity and independence as long as possible. If you have a diagnosis of MCI (Mild Cognitive Impairment), give me a call so you too can preserve your assets, dignity, and independence.
