I check my Nextdoor feed about once a day—I like keeping up with what’s going on in my neighborhood. Recently, one of my neighbors posted an important scam alert that I wanted to pass along.
They had received this alarming email:
Subject: Official Notice – Discrepancies for [Name]
Message:
“Irregularities have been noticed in your last tax filing. Kindly examine and rectify the matter without delay to avoid enforcement actions.
Note: To view this issue, it must be opened on a Windows operating system for security and confidentiality reasons.”
[View Form] ← This link either leads to a virus or a fake site designed to steal your data.
Worse yet, the email included another link using the irs.gov domain, such as:
www.IRS.gov/… ← This is also a spoofed link. I won’t include the full address here, but it’s designed to trick people into thinking it’s from the official IRS site.
PLEASE BE AWARE:
Do not click on links in unsolicited emails.
The IRS will never call, email, or text you about tax issues.
Always go directly to www.irs.gov by typing it into your browser—not by clicking a link.
Stay safe and cautious online.
